Airport West 11.10.76 def Moonee Valley 5.12.42
The U14 boys went into the match with 2 wins and 1 loss for the season ready to take on the undefeated Moonee Valley team. The return of Liam McBride from injury was welcomed and from the outset he was a dominant player, clearly the best on ground for the day. He took contested mark after contested mark, ran and carried the ball tirelessley and found his team mates readily bringing them into the game. The Eagles took control of the game in the first quarter with a lead of 16 points. The ball was in our forward line for most of the quarter with the forwards having seven scoring shots to one. Tom Muscat was dominant in the ruck and forward line, marking strongly and Angus Walker loose across the wing repelled many forward thrusts from the opposition.
In the second quarter Moonee Valley fought back and it was their turn to battle the cross wind. Trent Thomson worked hard to repel forward moves as he marked strongly and kept his opponent in check. The kick outs tested the boys structures and by half time the lead was whittled to 9 points.
The third quarter saw the boys get to the contests first and take a commanding lead into three quarter time having kept the opposition scoreless in the quarter as well as winning the hard ball gets. We kicked an early goal in the last quarter which was going to make it difficult for the opposition. Will Andrews’ game on the wing was outstanding and players like Cody Reardon and Jye Milne-Anderson were finding the ball and making the play. Moonee Valley continued to fight on but the sealer by Matthew Kirk ensured our third win in a row for the season. It was a great team effort with each player making a contribution and standing up for the team. Many goals were the result of team work and this is a good sign for the future. Next week we play Taylors Lakes at home on Mothers’ Day.
