Airport West 6-11-47 def Craigieburn 0-0-0

The boys were coming off two wins in a row and wanted to make it three.  Friday nights practice match at training was a hard battle with a few tears along the way but nothing too serious.  This showed their competitiveness and wanting to do their best to win.

The captain for this home game against Craigieburn was Ethan Stephenson who has been one of our best players of late.  Ethan won the toss and decided to kick towards the Etzel Road end.  The onballers did a great job of getting it out of the centre quickly which we have been practicing.

The first quarter was great with us kicking three goals, the first going to Lachlan Hamilton. William Lee came close not long after but unfortunately hit the post.  Ben Noakes laid a fantastic tackle and got rewarded for his efforts.  Our next two goals were kicked by the other two members of the blonde ball magnet brigade in Cooper McMullin and Darcy Broom.  Nikolas Ellul did very well and remembered to take five steps back when he got a free kick to kick over the man on the mark and find a team mate.

J.J Veneziano had a great second quarter getting plenty of the ball including a good bounce and long kick and then another good effort which went right to the goal line.  Stefan Sabatino had three or four nice touches also with a booming kick out of the centre square.  Ethan Walker did some good ruckwork and Kristian Dipaolo got some kicks and also helped out a team mate with a great shepherd.  Connor Mundy earned a free kick in front of goal and put it right through the centre for our only major for the quarter.

In the third quarter we kicked two more goals, one went to Nikolas Ellul and the other to Lachlan Ziros whose very first goal was a clever little snap over his shoulder.  J.J Veneziano, Lachlan Ziros and Darcy Broom had the ball on a string and got plenty of touches in the quarter.  One of the highlights was Dean Mastranico`s handball and then shepherd which allowed his team mate to get free.  He then ran straight back to his man, well done Dean you are always doing the team thing.  There were two other good shepherds by Lachlan Hamilton and William Lee also that were very pleasing.

Harrison Rogers had a great last quarter and so did Deon Uren who had numerous kicks and tackles.  Deon saved his best for last with a huge shepherd right in front of our bench to allow his team mate to pick up the ball and boot it our way.   The effort by the opposition Craigieburn player to get straight back up after such a big hit was also very inspirational, well done boys.  This week’s game is at home against second place Hillside will prove a big test as they beat us fairly easy in the first round.  Hopefully we can put up a better effort and show everyone how much we have improved.
