5 Goal Opening Sets Up First Victory

A blistering opening helped Airport West notch their first EDFL Premier Division win since 2015.

George Nabbout opened the scoring in the 3rd minute and Anthony Aloi, with two great defensive marks, set the tone for the afternoon.

The Eagles went further ahead with goals to Lachlan Cavanagh and Jayden Ranno, before fantastic back to back goals from Ned Gentile increased the lead to 30 points. Avondale Heights opened their account in 14th minute, but Damandeep Aujla answered with a booming kick from 50 out. Soon after Nabbout rose high to take a great mark but could not convert.

Just as it was looking like turning into an easy victory, 3 quick Avondale Heights goals, including two to Robb, saw the margin reduced to 4 points.

On the cusp of quarter-time, Godden slotted home to take the Eagles 10 points ahead at the break.

2nd QTR

Two minutes in Avondale reduced the margin to 4 points before a 50 metre penalty gave Rizzo the opportunity to slot home from 50. Tyson Young then got his 1st for the day, before Gentille got his 3rd and Airport West’s 6th. Zachary Racovolis added a 7th and Alex Penaluna captilised on a defensive error to help extend the lead to 20 points at the half time break.

3rd QTR

The Eagles kicked the 1st goal of the quarter 2 minutes in, when Aujla got the better of a one-on-one duel and snapped truly with a checkside from the pocket. Six minutes later Aujla marked on 50 and converted pushing the lead out to 31 points. The Eagles attack on the ball and defensive play continued to repel Avondale Heights’ attacks. Nabbout took mark of the day and Lawton finished off some good work to grab a handy late goal to see the lead at 38 points.

4th QTR

Any chance of an Avondale Heights comeback was snuffed out early in the 4th quarter when Nelson and Aujla goaled within the first 4 minutes. Further goals to Lawton, Young, Racovolis and Penaluna saw the Eagles run out 82 point victors.

EDFL Meadows Greyhounds Man of The Match Anthony Aloi “We’ve done the right thing in patches. It was good to put it together for 4 quarters….We come into every game with the expectation to win whether it’s Aberfeldie , whether it’s Glenroy, no matter who it is. If we keep playing the way we’ve played today we can definitely survive but we know it’s a very good competition and there are a lot of good sides. We’ve just got to keep going on, following the processes, keep doing what Geoff wants us to do.

Coach Geoff Maddern – “We were pretty good at Strathmore for a half, so there was a real focus at half time to make sure the guys came out bouncing in the 2nd half and we probably played our best footy for the year.”
