Airport West 7.5-47 def. Maribyrnong Park 4.4-28

For the second week running, the U10 Div 2 team was involved in a top of the table clash and again, conditions were perfect for footy.  Pre-match the boys were ‘up’; watching Zak Doyle and Josh Pardo run out through their 50th game banner reinforced the positive mood and the boys hit the paddock smiling and ready to play.

It was clear from the start that Marby Park had also come to play and in the first half they were really switched on, playing on often and running the ball swiftly down the ground. The efforts of our back half were extremely important under constant pressure from such strong opposition. Mitchell Pontin and Max Guarnaccia made it hard for their opponents with some strong tackling, whilst Zak again showed his leadership qualities, setting the example by taking the game on at every opportunity.

As always Ryan Martin’s skills were on display and he racked up the possessions, winning the footy through clever reading of the play, combined with constant running and attack on the footy. With four goals scored against us in the first half, we really needed someone to step up in front of goals – Liam Cox was that player. Playing at centre half forward, then full forward, Liam kicked our only two goals of the first half.

Ty Macumber dominated the second quarter, making the wing his own by winning the footy through clever contested play.

Going into the half time break two goals down, it was really pleasing to see that there was some excitement amongst the team about the contest that was unfolding; the boys had their heads up and were extremely positive – I heard a lot of encouragement and support in the huddle.

In the third quarter the boys brought out their best. Jack Thomson was moved into the ruck and he relished the opportunity – our midfield all of a sudden looked dangerous. Jack took control of the ruck and Flynn Gentile began stamping his authority on the contest, breaking the lines and kicking two important goals. Jacob Platt was constantly lurking up forward, drawing the Marby defenders away from the goals and opening space in the forward line. Luke Scicchitano was also amongst the goal kickers in the third, sitting on the end of a pass from Thomas Borg who played another quality game, both up forward and in defence.

Jasper Young was full of run in the last, patrolling the wing and keeping his opponent guessing. Dante Munoz and Dylan Fsadni played great all game, but when in defence in the fourth quarter these two were impossible to get past; they understand the importance of second and third attempts and never give up, no matter what is thrown at them.

Most pleasing was the way the backmen stuck to their men and kept Marby to one solitary point in the second half. The result could have gone against us if it wasn’t for the defensive efforts of Peter Taxidis, Isaac Cullen, Jack Catalfamo, Noah Candotti, Marcus Kanavas, Jasper, Jacob and Josh.

Halfway through the season and we couldn’t have asked for a better start, playing all competitors and placing top of the ladder, undefeated. The coaches and parents are proud of the way the boys have played; as a tight knit team showing true on-field sportsmanship. We look forward to the second half of the season – we know that the other teams will bring their best when up against us, but I’m just as sure that the boys will be up to any challenge. Go Eagles!
