History

Airport West EAGLES

Airport West Football Club Incorporated was established in 1961 and competes within the Essendon District Football League (EDFL). It has developed to be a strong community-based football club, with a family orientated approach.

The Club currently fields 19 sides across the senior and junior playing groups, as well as a strong AusKick program featuring more than 150 kids. The aims of the Club are to develop the skills and attributes of our players to ensure they have the best chance of enjoying their football. Growth in the suburb and surrounding areas has enabled the Club to grow further and are expectant on fielding even more junior sides in the coming years.

We are thinking more of our future these days, forward planning to ensure the days ahead are as rewarding as the day’s past. Football has taken on a more professional façade in recent years. Our players are expected to be disciplined, well trained and performing on field. Off field, discipline, training, and performance is equally important – many hundreds of hours of work need to be completed behind the scenes. We take our hats off to all our volunteers who contribute to our Club.

Maurice Boyse	Essendon, North Melbourne & Sydney	75	1975 - 1983	Maurice was an outstanding junior footballer at APW, winning 2 Junior B&F awards and playing 96 matches between 1967 - 1974. He was then recruited by Essendon in 1975 where he played 9 matches before transferring to North Melbourne in 1977 and playing in the 1978 Grand Final where North lost to Hawthorn, with Maurice kicking 2 goals. He subsequently transferred to South Melbourne in 1981 and finished his VFL career with Sydney in 1983.
Justin Madden	Essendon & Carlton	332	1980 - 1996	Justin grew up in Airport West (North Street), attending St.Christophers primary school. In 1978, he won the APW U/17s B&F & soon enough his extreme height & talent had attracted the Essendon recruiters. In 1980, he made his VFL debut. By 1983, Essendon's bounty of talls squeezed Justin out of the club where Carlton happily recruited him and this is where he enjoyed the bulk of his stellar VFL/AFL career including many honours such as being a member of Carlton's 1987 & 1995 premiership teams.
Mark Thompson	Essendon	202	1983 - 1996	Mark 'Bomber' Thompson was another Airport West local, attending St.Christophers primary school. His junior football prominence pinnacled in seasons 1979 & 1980 where in the U/17s, Mark won both seasons' Club B&F. He also won the EDFL U/17 B&F in 1980, a premiership season for the team. By this time, Essendon were well aware of his talents & it was off to the Essendon U/19s after that. He debut in the Essendon seniors two seasons later and the rest is well documented history; a star-studded career at Essendon including three Premierships and captaining the club before steering Geelong to two premierships as Coach.
David Johnston	Essendon & Fitzroy	66	1987 - 1994	David commenced with Airport West in 1978 playing in the U/9s premiership team & winning the B&F. He repeated his B&F win in 1980 whilst captaining the U/11s (Grand Finalists). He was an extremely talented junior player with skills on both sides of the body already developed at such a young age. David moved to Doutta Stars for the latter part of his junior playing days before being recruited by Essendon and playing senior VFL/AFL between 1987 - 1992 (41 matches). In 1992, he transferred to Fitzroy where he played a further 25 games before finishing his AFL career in season 1994.
Andrew Johnston	Fitzroy	9	1990 - 1991	Andrew commenced his junior football at APW in 1979 & played 61 matches by the end of season 1982. He won the U/11s B&F in seasons 1981 & 1982. In these early years, the Johnston brothers (Matthew, David & Andrew) were dominating their respective age groups for APW; Andrew showing no fear in getting the football. He later transferred to Doutta Stars before being recruited by Fitzroy FC where he debuted as a 19yo in 1990.
Jeremy Laidler	Geelong, Carlton & Sydney	20	2009 - 2017	Jeremy played only the one season at APW (16 matches), that being 2004 in the U/16 premiership team; Jeremy playing fullback. He subsequently moved to Doutta Stars and then Calder Cannons before Geelong selected him in the 2008 AFL Rookie Draft. In 2009 he was promoted to Geelong's senior list & made is AFL debut. Lack of opportunity at the Cattery saw Laidler traded to Carlton during the 2010 AFL trade week where he played for two seasons. In season 2014 he was delisted & picked up by Sydney Swans where he has become a regular player.

History Timeline

1961

The club begins. Under 17 team registered with the EDFL approx. 3 weeks before the start of 1961 season. Team mainly consisting of 14 year old boys.
Results were predictable; some heavy losses in our winless first season. Team coached by Graham Hill and captained by John Griffiths.

Matches played on the severely sloped ground now known as Etzel Street oval.
– The original Etzel Street change/clubrooms were built by our members using voluntary labour & donated building materials; although primitive by
today’s standards, they were adequate & many a good time enjoyed in them by our members. These rooms were located where the old playground
adjacent to Etzel Street currently resides.

1962

9/5/1962 : the date of our first victory. The Essendon Gazette reporting “Young team has first even win”. That team being our U/17s defeating Broadmeadows 7.9.51 to 5.5.35. We finished mid-table in our 2nd season. Team coached by Frank Stubberfield.

1963

Club’s first Senior team is established playing in EDFL ‘C’ Grade, coached by ex-Richmond player Kevin Hogan, finishing mid-table.

1964

Under 17s team make finals in their 4th season, coached by Frank Stubberfield. – Under 15s team established.

1965

Senior ‘C’ Grade team play finals, finishing Preliminary Finalists in the team’s 3rd season. Coached by Ron ‘Strutta’ Carlton. – Under 15s (Division 2) win Premiership – the club’s inaugral Premiership. Team dubbed “The Killer Crew”, coached by Neil Jordan. – Under 13s team established.

1966

Senior ‘C’ Grade team finish 2nd – Grand Finalists, coached by Ron ‘Strutta’ Carlton. [GF: Ascot Youth Centre 9.9.63 def. APW 6.14.50] – Ray Phair wins EDFL ‘C’ Grade Best & Fairest. – Under 15’s (Division 2) go back-to-back & win the Premiership; “Killer Crew” again coached by Neil Jordan.

1967

Senior Grade team promoted to ‘B’ Grade after proving competitiveness in previous two seasons of ‘C’ Grade. – Ray Phair wins his 2nd club Senior Grade Best & Fairest.

1968

Club commences playing home matches on the new ground off Clydesdale Road (now known as Hansen Reserve).

Council build upgraded pavilion used for the new ground.

Senior Reserves team established.

Mike Walsh wins EDFL U/13A Best & Fairest.

1969

Malcolm ‘Cal’ Griffiths, much loved past President & Secretary, retires. Cal was instrumental in the club’s creation & development in its formative years.

1970

U/13C’s win Premiership, co-coached by Gary Thomas & Chris Trevillian. – Gary Thomas wins EDFL ‘B’ Grade Best & Fairest.

1971

Senior ‘B’ Grade team finish 2nd – Grand Finalists, coach by Gary Thomas. – Gary Thomas wins EDFL ‘B’ Grade Best & Fairest (his 2nd).

1972

Senior ‘B’ Grade team finish 2nd – Grand Finalists for the 2nd season running. Coach Gary Thomas.

1973

Senior Grade team promoted to ‘A’ Grade after proving competitiveness in previous two seasons of ‘B’ Grade.

Gary Thomas deemed ineligible winner of the EDFL ‘A’ Grade Best & Fairest (leading vote getter) due to “professional status” ruling.

Kevin Swale retires after completing his 5th season as President (1969 – 1973). Kevin was instrumental in club improvements such as first floodlights, original honour boards, liquor license, general facility upgrades and introducing professional management.
